“Folktales” is a general term for the multitude of engaging stories and adventures from various cultures, passed down from generation to generation through the ancient tradition of oral storytelling. Our parents heard these tales when they were young and shared them with us as children, often under the moonlight or around fires after dark.

The term “folktale” also refers both to the original oral stories and their literary retellings. The literary retellings retain the basic stories and themes and some oral characteristics but are often longer and more ornate in language.

Most folktales were not written down for centuries, leading to variations in their telling.
