🏁 ÒPIN 🏁
🐢 Page 1 · Long ago 🐢

👵🏾 In Makawa town, there was a woman who sold locust-beans. Her name was Iya-Oniru. She knew EVERYTHING about locust-beans! Her father was a farmer, her mother was a trader. (BOOM! Yummy beans.)

Since she was little, Iya-Oniru helped them. She knew how to plant, harvest, and prepare iru for market. (DANCE DANCE DANCE! 💃)

🗣️ Her mother would say: “Go to the farm with father, pick beans. When you come back, we’ll wash them in the river!” (SPLASH SPLASH! 💦) Iya-Oniru remembered this many times.

🥥 Page 2 · Working with iru 🥥

It was custom to wash locust-beans in the river. Then they boiled them, and peeled them. (BUBBLE BUBBLE! ) They could also dry them to keep for long.

☀️ Iya-Oniru always kept dried iru. When fresh ones finished, she used dried ones. (SMART! ) She worked very hard.

Her parents grew old. Iya-Oniru did the farming and trading all by herself. (GRRR! But she worked hard.)

💰 Page 3 · The best iru 💰

Many people bought Iya-Oniru’s iru because it was so good. But Iya-Oniru had no friends. (OH NO! ) She didn’t greet people, and never shared anything. (STINGY STINGY! )

“Why are you so rude?” another seller asked. (🤨)
“I don’t care! If they don’t like it, go elsewhere!” said Iya-Oniru. (HMPF! )
😢 Page 4 · Nobody liked her 😢

Everyone said Iya-Oniru was mean. She didn’t love anyone, and no one loved her. (CRY CRY! ) She only loved money and her beans.

Even at the river, she didn’t chat. She just watched her beans carefully. “I must be careful!” (👀)

🌽 Page 5 · Bean trouble 🌽

One day, locust-beans became very scarce. The sellers who still had beans became rich. Iya-Oniru was one of them! (CHA-CHING! 💰)

But Iya-Oniru became even stingier. She didn’t want to give anyone a single bean. (NO NO NO! ) She hated spending money.

🏡 Page 6 · Big house 🏡

Iya-Oniru bought a big house. She hired workers, but she still washed the beans herself. She trusted nobody. (TRUST NO ONE! )

“I’ll go myself!” she told them. “Don’t give extra beans to anyone – not even ONE!” (WARNING! )

😞 Page 7 · Sad parents 😞

Iya-Oniru was grown up, but she never married. Her parents were sad. (SAD! ) They said: “Daughter, money isn’t everything.” But Iya-Oniru didn’t listen.

Everybody laughed at Iya-Oniru. “So stingy!” they said. (LAUGH LAUGH! 😂)

🌊 Page 8 · Odo-Alo River 🌊

Iya-Oniru started going to a different river: Odo-Alo. People were afraid of that river. (SCARY! ) They called it “mysterious river”.

But Iya-Oniru was not scared. She washed her beans there. “I don’t believe stories!” she said. (BOASTFUL! )

📖 Page 9 · Old story 📖

The elders told a tale. Long ago, two women went to the river. One was kind, she went to a courtyard, picked good seeds, and became rich. (LUCKY! ) The other picked bad seeds and had bad luck. (OH DEAR! )

There were two kinds of seeds: silent ones and noisy “kami-kami-kami” ones. (SILENT vs NOISY! )

🤔 Page 10 · What will happen? 🤔

People wondered: “If Iya-Oniru drops her beans, will she jump after them?” (HMM… )

In the story, there were river spirits – a fisherman, an old woman with a sore, and others. (MYSTERIOUS! )

🎵 Page 11 · Iya-Oniru’s song 🎵
🔊 LISTEN to Iya-Oniru’s song (for kids)!

Awe iru kan
Emi re la jo n lo
Bo o rokun … (SING ALONG! 🎤)

Suddenly, ONE bean fell into the river! Iya-Oniru jumped right after it! (SPLASH! ) “My bean! My bean!”

🔊 Hear the song again

A fisherman called: “Woman, go back! You can’t swim after one bean!” (DANGER! ) But Iya-Oniru didn’t listen.

🔊 Song continues

A swimmer said: “Fear the sea! You will die!” (WARNING! ) But Iya-Oniru kept singing: “Awe iru kan, emi re la jo n lo…” (😭)

🔊 Last song

The waves grew like mountains. Iya-Oniru struggled. “What have I done?” she cried. (CRASH! )

But the big waves swallowed Iya-Oniru. (GULP! ) She was gone. People said: “Just one bean! What a waste!”

🌱 Moral: Don’t be stingy. Share and love people! ❤️
